Next.js from the beginning!

Next.js is everywhere in modern web development - but it’s often explained in a way that makes it feel way more complicated than it actually is. In this workshop, we take it back to basics and introduce Next.js from the ground up, even if you’ve never heard of it before!

Next.js is a web framework built on top of React that helps you create full websites more easily. If React is the tool you use to build user interfaces, Next.js adds the missing pieces you need to turn those interfaces into a complete, fast, and well-structured website.

Through a small, hands-on example, we’ll explore file-based routing, the difference between server-side and client-side rendering, and why performance and SEO come up so often in Next.js conversations.

The goal isn’t to build a big app - it’s to leave with a clear mental model of Next.js, a solid first experience, and the confidence to keep exploring on your own.

Come learn with peers in a relaxed, beginner-friendly space - and ask all the questions!

Getting Started with Next.js - A practical introduction

              Workshop by: Pauline Morsli

Next.js is everywhere in modern web development, but it’s often introduced with a lot of buzzwords that can make it feel more complex than it actually is. In this workshop, we’ll take a step back and look at what Next.js really is, why it exists, and how it fits into the React ecosystem.

We’ll go over the core ideas behind Next.js, such as file-based routing, server-side vs client-side rendering, and why performance and SEO are often mentioned when people talk about it. Together, we’ll walk through a simple Next.js setup and write a small page to see how things work in practice.

The goal isn’t to build a full app, but to leave with a clear mental model of Next.js and enough hands-on experience to feel comfortable exploring it on your own afterwards.

Ps.  This is an exploratory workshop. We’ll focus on understanding concepts and trying things out together rather than finishing a polished project. The session is interactive - questions are very welcome!

Pauline has been working as a software engineer for more than 5 years, mainly with React and Next.js. After transitioning from journalism into tech, she’s especially interested in making technical topics less intimidating and more accessible She strongly believes in women, non-binary and trans people taking more space in technical roles and is actively involved in creating safer, more empowering spaces in tech. Outside of coding, she’s usually spending time with her dog and cat, and takes cheese very seriously.
