16 February 13:00-17:00Scionova's Office, Gothenburg

Ready to start your coding journey?

Gothenburg's first event of the year - together with Chalmers University of Technology! Learn the basics of data wrangling and visualization, in this beginner-friendly workshop in R. But that’s not all -  explore ways to make introductory programming materials more accessible and demystify the field for everyone together with our panel!

Teaming up with Chalmers University of Technology and DrGENIE - we have a perfect introductory day, for you who is curious about coding or want to explore a new coding language. We'll discuss how we can make coding more accessible to everyone - addressing the challenges posed by programming jargon and the predominance of English-language resources. How we can break down barriers and make learning to code more inviting for all. And in a hands-on workshop you'll get introduced to essential data wrangling and visualization in R. You'll learn how to import data, clean and restructure it, and create meaningful visualizations like box plots, scatter plots, and bar charts.

You’ll be doing all this in a safe, supportive space where there are no expectations - just people ready to help you along your learning journey. Whether you’re new to coding or looking to build your skills, this event is the perfect starting point!

Panel discussion & Coding Workshop

Programming as Language: The need to lower barriers to entry

Panel: Lotta Eriksson, Eszter Lakatos & Vi Varga

Panelists will discuss the need for more accessibility to learning about coding, with a specific focus on language. Programming jargon (ex., referring to folders as directories) can create unnecessary obstacles and intimidate interested learners. This is compounded by the fact that the majority of programming resources are in English, despite most of the world not being native English speakers. The panel will discuss how we can/should make introductory programming materials more accessible, demystifying the field.

Lotta recently graduated from Chalmers with a degree in Engineering Mathematics, developed an interest in how programming and mathematics can be applied to solve complex biological questions during their studies. Currently, a PhD student in Applied Mathematics at Chalmers, focusing on developing mathematical models and computational methods to study cancer progression.

Eszter, originally from Budapest, Hungary, has always been fascinated by biology and mathematics.
Completed an MSc in Infobionics and a PhD in Theoretical Biology at Imperial College London. Now focused on cancer genomics, develops mathematical tools to study cancer evolution. In April 2023, Eszter joined Chalmers in Gothenburg as an Assistant Professor. Though not formally trained in programming, works primarily with R, alongside MATLAB, Python, and Julia. These days, much of their work involves data wrangling and creating visualizations in R.

Vi is a doctoral student in the Department of Life Sciences. Their research within the division of Systems and Synthetic Biology utilizes bioinformatics-based approaches to study the functional proteins in vaginal bacteria, with the long-term goal of contributing to the development of medication for bacterial vaginosis. Vi takes an interdisciplinary approach to their research, having studied archaeology during their undergraduate years.

R for Data Analysis & Visualization

Workshop by: Lotta Eriksson, Eszter Lakatos & Vi Varga

During this introductory workshop in R, the aim is to introduce participants to the fundamentals of data wrangling and visualization using R. The workshop will cover essential commands for importing data, cleaning and restructuring or filtering datasets, and visualizing the data through various techniques such as box plots, scatter plots, and bar charts.
